Inspired by Silicon Valley billionaire Peter Thiel’s controversial educational alternative, the Thiel Fellowship, a new book, online community, and movement called 2 Billion Under 20 is sharing how Millennials are breaking down age barriers and changing the world. Olympians, teenage entrepreneurs, singers, actors, scientists, nonprofit founders, computer scientists, and more from over twenty different countries and all walks of life have shared their firsthand anecdotes of finding success at a young age.
Two NYU students, Stacey Ferreira (22) and Jared Kleinert (19), have opted to put college on hold to build businesses, connect with the world’s smartest and most talented Millennials, and release their new book, “2 Billion Under 20”. Ferreira and Kleinert met in November 2012 at the Thiel Foundation Summit in New York City, where they were challenged to “spread the virus” of inspiring more young people to do amazing things with their lives.
Now, Stacey Ferreira (a recentlynamed Thiel Fellow herself who has previously raised $1.2M from Richard Branson, Alex Welch, and Jerry Murdock for a company she sold in 2013) and Jared Kleinert (the “Definition of Social Entrepreneur” according to Forbes, and marketing specialist for New York Times bestselling authors, founders of billion dollar brands, and Fortune 500s), are sharing what they’ve learned from bringing together 75 of some of the world’s smartest and most talented young Millennials.
Of the roughly 6.97 billion people on Earth today, approximately 2 billion of them are under 20 years old, and have been branded “millennials.” If you type “Millennials are” into Google’s search bar, the autocomplete feature suggests “lazy,” “stupid,” and “doomed.” But the crowd’s got this one wrong. Now more than ever, young people see that the future is theirs to create—and they’re accomplishing unprecedented things.
Stacey Ferreira, CoAuthor of 2 Billion Under 20: How Millennials Are Breaking Down Age Barriers and Changing the World If the two billion people in the world under twenty years old spent every day pursuing their passions and working together to solve the world’s most pressing problems, just imagine what the world could be.”
Jared Kleinert, CoAuthor of 2 Billion Under 20: How Millennials Are Breaking Down Age Barriers and Changing the World Ferreira’s and Kleinert’s new book 2 BILLION UNDER 20: How Millennials Are Breaking Down Age Barriers and Changing the World (July 28, 2015; US $25.99/CAN $29.99; 9781250067616; St. Martin’s Press) slashes negative stereotypes to prove their generation is making an unprecedented and positive impact on the world. Both young successful entrepreneurs themselves, Ferreira and Kleinert believe in breaking down age barriers to make a difference, in their own lives and in others. After speaking with their equally impressive peers, they realized that, despite their generation being called “lazy”, “entitled”, or “screwed”, Millennials have inspiring stories to share with the world that could inspire the 2 billion people in the world 20 and under, as well as older generations who need to learn what makes Millennials tick.
In 2 BILLION UNDER 20, readers are introduced to 75 contributors at or under age 20 (at time of writing) who have involved themselves in remarkable things, from entrepreneurship to athletics to music and more. They have all joined their forces to show the world that age is just a number. Among them include:
  • Paige McKenzie, who started her own YouTube channel at the age of 16 that now has more than 55 million views, and has spun off into multipart book and movie deals.
  • Jack Andraka, who won Intel’s ISEF competition at 15 for creating an early detection test for Pancreatic, Lung, and Ovarian cancers test at age 14, all with information he found, for free, online.
  • Sam Mikulak, who’s represented Team USA in the Olympics and is a seventime NCAA Champion in men’s gymnastics, as well as the cofounder of MateBros, a new tea company that raised over $40,000 on Kickstarter
  • Tallia Storm, a Virgin Records recording artist from Scotland who was discovered by and opened a concert for Elton John at age 13.
  • Michael Costigan, who works as a Director at Telesign (the leading provider of mobile identity solutions) by day and speaks around to world to Millennials about creating their own futures by night
  • Dau Jok, who escaped civil war in South Sudan to become the captain of the University of Pennsylvania’s Division I basketball team and founder of a nonprofit Sudanese youth foundation (he also recently joined the United States Army Reserve)
Above all, 2 BILLION UNDER 20 shows that, contrary to popular belief, Millennials across the globe are succeeding in changing the world with their alternative, ambitious paths. 2 Billion Under 20, comes out July 28 from St. Martins Press you can pre-order here!
