Nigeria: Ghana Port Authority Understudies Nigerian Ports Operations

Ghana Ports Authority (GPA) has stepped up efforts to understudy Nigerian ports, especially the way it has succeeded in synchronising the oil and gas industry of the economy in its operations.

To this end, GPA has sent a three-man-delegation to see things for themselves with a view to ensure how it can be replicated same in the gold rich West African country.
The Ghanaian port three-man delegation was led by Mr. Samuel Ntow-Kummi. The other members of the delegation are Mr. Roderick Odoo and Mr. Nuhu Khalid.

According to the leader of the delegation, Ntow-Kummi the visit to Port Harcourt port was part of their official visit to Nigeria to understudy the inner workings of NPA.He said that the visit is well rewarding, noting that they will take back home new things and ideas they learnt from their port tour. "We have learned a lot about Rivers Port and Onne Port even in Ghana, and our coming here have made us to see things for ourselves", he added.Ntwo-Kummi noted that what they have in Ghana cannot be compared with the existing facilities at Nigerian ports.
"We are particularly impressed after the guided tour of Port Harcourt and Onne ports," he said.

Odoo in his remarks said as guests from Ghana, they are particularly concerned on how they can develop GPA in line with the oil and gas sectors, as done by NPA in Nigeria.
The delegation stated that the visit by the Ghanaian team to Rivers Port focused on "tariff procedure for oil and gas related cargo" under the Commercial Department of Rivers Port Complex (RPC).
The highlights of the visit was made by Mr. Tokumbo Bamgbala, the Chief ICT Officer, who took the visitors through the historical past and present of RPC especially on the concession region.

Receiving the delegation, the Rivers State capital, Port Harcourt, the immediate past Port Manager, RPC, Mrs. Carolyn Akum Ufere expressed delight at the decision of the GPA to send the team to Nigerian ports.
fere who is now the General Manager, Special Duties, NPA Headquarters, Marina, Lagos commended the special delegation from Ghana Ports and Harbours for the visit.She described the visit to the Rivers ports as a bold step aimed at learning the rudiments of NPA system with the aim to achieving a synergy.

"There are certainly things you can learn from us and vice versa", Mrs. Ufere said even as she enjoined them to see how they can incorporate positive things they learn from Nigeria, when they get back to their country.

In order to make the delegates to see things for themselves, they were later taken round the port by the Chief Port Public Affairs Officer, RPC, Mrs. .Barbara Ejemeh Nchey-Achukwu. They were taken round the ports facilities of the terminal operators. These include BUA and PTOL at the quays area of the port which remains the oldest in the country.
