Saturday August 8 2015 will go down in the history books of
New York and the Apollo Center as BET Award winner Michael Owusu Addo aka
Sarkodie and a number of top notch performers from Ghana, Nigeria and the USA
including Lighter Tod, Jadiluc, Pappy Kojo, Joey B, Banky W, Efya, Ice Prince,
Bisa K.Dei, Kwaw Kese, E.L, The Composerz and Shatta Wale delivered to a sold
out crowd. With artists taking turns and delivering wonderfully to an energetic
crowd that responded to almost every line of songs being performed, one could
only tell that the concert was indeed history made. Ahead of the concert, Jesse
Weaver Shipley, a professor of anthropology
at Haverford College in
Pennsylvania and the author of “Living the Hiplife: Celebrity and
Entrepreneurship in Ghanaian Popular Music” in an interview with the New York
Times said described the event at the Apollo as a test for Ghanaian artists to
reach a broader audience; “The Apollo is really like a test in an exciting way
for the Ghanaian artists to reach out to broader audiences and to enter into
the American mainstream musical consciousness.” The Apollo Center takes up to a
1500 capacity and has hosted several top class events including a concert with
The Jacksons, A Night With Barack Obama and many others. Sarkodie, after the
concert has taken turns to express his appreciation to fans who turned up to
the venue and colleague musicians who joined for the concert. The surprise
artist on the night was Shatta Wale. Sarkodie, History in the Making Concert
was organized by TM Entertainment owned by a Ghanaian born New York based Terry
Masson
